Barbie Head Molds

Postby Max » Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:09 pm

There's been a lot of talk about Barbie head molds, so I thought I'd share the head mold list from my Barbie Collectors book. Here's the list they have. It's not a complete list of EVERY head mold, but it is a pretty decent guide to the most used molds.

Those are a LOT of head molds! FYI The 1959 one, when recast, turned out larger than the original was. This is the same mold used on Silkstone dolls. Years later, they made the 1959 mold smaller and more accurate, making the vintage repros look much more like the originals.

Thank you Max for posting the history of Barbie heads! It's very interesting to see them! I think I like that Steffie head. She could be painted better, but I kind of liked her. You should do the Ken doll heads, if you have some extra time! That would be interesting, too. :D

This website has a lot of pictures of different head molds.

They're lacking My Scene molds though. I think that might be my next project.

Thanks Max!

This is my opinion on the molds.

No.1 Scares me. If I ever had her when I was little she'd be in the trash bin.
That's one ugly head. Creepy!!!

TNT and Stacey are cute, glad TNT is being used for Pop Life. Would love to
see Stacey again, on a more modern look. Currently she's only been on repro.

Steffie, always loved her since the first time I saw her.

Superstar is okay, pretty. I like her but not something I'm excited about.

Guardian Goddess, she looks ugly to me. Similar to Lara.

Oriental and Spanish is on the "pass," not liking them at all. Glad they're
no longer used. Spanish's lip makes her look funny.

Rocker Diva, cute but again, her lips are too thin. Would be nice to see her
back for a little tween/kids line.

Island Fun Christie, please don't come back lol.

Asha, I notice they still use her for Christie and Nikki playline dolls.
I like her. Hope they continue with her.

Nichelle, not liking her.

Shani, looks like another version of Asha, I don't mind seeing her again.

Neptune Fantasy, Love that face, isn't she the Mackie mold?

Rollerblade Teresa, this one is okay but I wouldn't be running out to buy her.

Teen Talk, I like this one.

Goddess, she's pretty depending on how they use her. If only the 2008 AA Barbie
was released. I would have bought her.

Generation Girl, don't really like her. I don't mind, and won't be buying.

Lara, I hated this mold since the very beginning, start liking her now.
She's grown on me.

Lea, don't like this one much, but some barbie using this mold look pretty.

2002 AA, don't like this mold.

Society Girl AA, they should start using this one again. She's cute here.
I would love to see more of her.

Tango, Eww!!

My Scene, my first love lol. Obviously she's one of my favourite mold ever.
My first Barbie has this mold.

2004 Cali Girl Summer, I HATE this one. I don't know why they used it on so
many playline. I'm disgusted everytime I buy a doll that's labelled as
Summer, Barbie, and Teresa with this mold. Should give it a rest already.

Daria, I love this one, not my fave but really nice. She reminds me of
celebrities like Christina Aguilera.

Marisa, never liked this one. I bought only her bikini outfit. Also bought her
"pretty young thing" and realized, only her outfit are "pretty" so donated her
to my niece. Please do no use this mold again.

Nichelle 2004, she's okay, would love to see this one used on a lighter
tone. Not too fond of.

The "Keeping Ken" website has a list of Ken doll head molds, but they're mostly for just Ken himself. Neither Allan's original mold, nor the recast one, are shown...

http://www.manbehindthedoll.com/PARTS.htm

About the Steffie mold, there have been many different dolls created with that mold, so there's bound to be one you'll like. My favorite doll with it is the 70's Kelley doll:
http://www.kattisdolls.net/images/faces/11/Kelley9.jpg
And here's a whole bunch of dolls made with the Steffie mold:
http://www.kattisdolls.net/facemolds/steffie.htm

I think someone mentioned the TNT mold - I agree that it needs to be used more...I have lots of vintage dolls with this mold, mostly Barbie and I love it.
I also just love Jamie, the one & only friend doll to also use that mold.

LOL

Well to be fair you can't judge the face sculpts by these samples. They aren't necessarily the prettiest face screenings that they've used. And of course some are just dated. I think Diva/New Midge is one of the prettiest sculpts that Mattel has done and of course it's been used for many dolls over the last 20 years. Shani has always been an underused sculpt in my book. It's a personal fave too. And of course the repro heads are nice. I personally prefer the first TNT repro head which was used up until last year before the new revised TNT repro head made it's debut. It had a certain sweetness and roundness while the new has a pinched look about her.

Of the new face molds my favorite is one that is not pictured. It's the Generation Girl Tori/Mystery Squad Drew head sculpt. To me, that would be the perfect head for Barbie. And they never use it.

And yes, Neptune Fantasy is the Mackie head. It got it's name because it debuted on this doll which was designed by Bob Mackie.

I think in order to have a more accurate opinion of these molds, they should've posted them blank w/o the face paint.

I would really love it if Mattel really enlarged some of these molds to My Scene sized. Alas, we are stuck with an enlarged version of Steffie...over and over and over. Only once did we see those special RG lips. ><

I really wanted that Society Girl AA, unfortunately she's going for hundreds so I ended up getting the Caucasian one, which is also very pretty.
